First grade is taught by Nancy Fandrich. See 1st Grade Notes for enrollment requirements and guidelines. The information shared below is not necessarily all from the current school year. It is a representation of classroom activities that have occurred and can occur in this classroom.
In November, we visited Sutter's
Fort. We learned a lot, including a lot about the life
of the settlers in California, making bread in a stone oven, spinning
wool, crushing grain, and firing of a cannon (live
demonstration)! The fort was
used to protect the settlers. They had cannons stationed around the fort, and a
blacksmith demonstrated how to make a square-headed nail.

In October we visited a Pumpkin Farm.
We saw farm equipment, creative scare crows, pumpkins, and animals. We took a
hay ride, listened to a funny presentation, and picked out our very own pumpkin!

This fall we visited Larsen's Apple Barn
in Camino, CA. We looked at farm equipment, saw how apples were processed,
learned how apple cider is made, and got to test taste some of the goods! Click

You can see pictures from our Recycling Assembly. We learned a lot about our planet's resources and how to save them by recycling!
We studied the history of our Thanksgiving
Day holiday. As part of this study, we dressed up as pilgrims and Indians and
had a wonderful feast together (1st through 4th grade).

In January, we visited the Jelly
Belly Factory and learned all about the manufacturing of these treats. This
was interesting and informative since some of us had never really thought about
where these things come from! (click on the thumbnail image below to see the
full-blown image).
